Why make space for flowers in your vegie garden?

Did you know that even a few flowers will help to entice pollinators and help your vegies flourish? Edible flowers make a great addition to any garden bed, bringing a pop of colour, attracting bees, and adding an exotic aspect to your salads and leafy greens.

Lavender makes a great border, strategically placed to help bring the bees close to your fruiting trees or to attract flurries of colourful butterflies. It adds a sweet, spicy note to shortbreads or lemonade, and a few dried sprigs in a bag can help to prevent moths and musty smells in your small’s drawer.

Making space for a few marigolds amongst your tomatoes will improve the health of your plants, reconditioning the soil and cutting down on root pathogens that may stop them fruiting.

Nasturtiums are a great ground cover to fill in any spaces attractive to weeds. They also make a great salad, as both the flowers and the leaves are edible. Snapdragons, cornflowers, and dandelions are also edible flowers, making a great addition to salads, or you can lightly steam the stems to boost your leafy greens.

Next time you are thinking of what to plant in your vegie garden, remember to add some flowers!
